I’ve been in a very unique situation recently: I’ve been working a 9-5 job and running a business at the same time. It has been both a challenge and a great learning experience, and I thought I’d share my journey and offer some tips for anyone who may be considering the same route.

First things first: Before you make any decisions, it’s important to be honest with yourself and make sure that you are capable of both balancing your careers and having a reasonable quality of life. It’s important to be realistic about what you can take on and what your limits are. Once you’ve done the self-assessment, you’ll be able to make decisions about how to proceed.

Once you’ve determined that you’re capable of handling two careers, there are a few tips that can help make the juggling act easier. Here are a few tips from my personal experience:

  1. Set a Schedule and Stick to It- One of the most important things is to set a schedule and stick to it. Make sure that you set aside time for both of your careers, while still making time for friends, family and personal passions. Having a clear timeline of when you focus on each will make sure that you don’t get too overwhelmed and both jobs get the attention they need.

  2. Use Your Vacation Time Wisely- It’s important to make sure that you’re taking at least some time off to rest and recharge. If you find yourself needing more time to focus on your business, you can use your vacation time strategically. For example, taking an extra week to focus on side projects or client work during the slow season can be very beneficial.

  3. Utilize Tools to Manage Time- One of the biggest challenges for people with two jobs is managing their time effectively. There are lots of tools available to help you stay organized and make sure that you’re meeting all of your deadlines. From calendar apps to task management systems, find the tools that work for you and use them to your advantage.

  4. Outsource as Needed- It’s important to remember that you don’t have to do everything yourself. Outsourcing certain tasks or projects can be a great way to free up time to focus on bigger objectives.

  5. Take Breaks- This is an important one. It’s easy to push yourself too hard when you’re trying to manage two careers at the same time. Scheduling regular breaks can help keep you sane and make sure you’re not burning out.

I hope these tips help if you’re considering taking a similar route. It has definitely been a challenging experience, but I’ve learned a lot and feel like I’ve grown a great deal. Thankfully, I was able to manage both jobs and still have some measure of a quality of life. Good luck!
