Photographers can’t sell prints for a variety of reasons, the most obvious of which is that it’s difficult to make a profit from selling prints on their own. Many photographers rely on galleries, art shows, and other venues to help them sell their prints. However, even if a photographer was successfully able to sell prints on their own, there are still several reasons that selling prints can be challenging.
First, photographers need to ensure they’re not infringing upon any application in the market, such as copyright. Unless they have obtained permission or a license from the copyright holder, they can’t legally distribute or sell their work. Even when they do, there are still additional paperwork, fees, and registration required by copyright organizations that can be expensive to take on.
Second, photographers need to find customers. While some customers may be willing to purchase prints directly from the photographer, many photographers have to market their work to find new clients. That requires an investment in time, money, and possibly even staff for marketing efforts. Additionally, photographers have to find a way to deliver prints physically or digitally to their customers.
Finally, photographers have to consider the costs associated with printing, framing, and shipping. They should also be prepared to have the necessary insurance for the packaging and shipment of prints. Together, these costs add up and can significantly eat into any potential earnings from selling prints.
Given these challenges and expenses, many photographers choose to pursue other avenues for selling their work instead. Selling digital downloads, licensing images, and joining photograph aggregation sites can all be viable alternatives. Selling prints is still an option, but photographers should be aware that there may be additional costs associated with it.
