Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel was a French fashion designer, who is best known for her high-end couture, but she had a chilling past. Before becoming a famous fashion designer, she was born in an orphanage and later moved to a boarding house where she worked as an employee. She later joined an early 20th-century cabaret, become a mistress of a British industrialist, and then began selling hats with the help of a gentleman friend.

The Chanel fashion house has gone on to become a multi-billion dollar business. But, the disturbing story behind it involves allegations that Chanel was a Nazi spy in World War II. According to the allegations, Chanel was recruited to be a German spy code-named “Westminster” by her former lover, the German aristocrat Baron Hans Gunther von Dincklage. Some evidence suggests that she was paid to report back to the Nazis on the activities of the other European fashion designers.

Chanel used her influence to support European fascist groups and to make a protest against French Prime Minister Leon Blum, who was Jewish. She allegedly told journalists that Blum’s politics were “the work of Jews” and publicly supported Hitler’s rise to power.

Later in life, Chanel was charged with collaborating with the Nazis, but her trial was terminated without a verdict following her lawyer’s claim of a heart attack. However, the specifics of her time in Germany during the war remain a mystery.

Today, Coco Chanel’s fashion house is still considered a symbol of luxury and quality – but the dark and disturbing story of her past serves as an uncomfortable reminder of her morally questionable involvement in World War II.
