  1. Research your business ideas. A successful small business begins with an idea. Make sure you research the industry, competitive landscape and potential customers. Brainstorm different ideas and decide which one might be the most profitable.

  2. Write a business plan. Once you’ve selected a business concept, it’s time to create a business plan. This document outlines the details of the venture, such as the product or service you intend to offer, your target market, and financial projections. Be sure to include a sales and marketing strategy and milestones you plan to achieve.

  3. Secure funding. Depending on your business type, you may need to secure some financing. Consider using your own money, investment capital, crowd funding, or a combination of these.

  4. Find a location. Once you’ve secured financing, you’ll need to find a place to operate your business. If you plan to operate from home, create a space dedicated to your business. If you require a commercial space, negotiate a lease and factor in associated costs such as rent, utilities, and insurance.

  5. Get the necessary permits. Before officially launching your business, you may need to apply for various small business permits and licenses. Depending on where you’re located, these may include local business permits, tax registration, and sanitation permits.

  6. Establish a legal structure. Select a legal structure for your business, such as a sole proprietorship, partnership, or limited liability company (LLC). Each option has different tax and liability implications, so you may want to consult with an attorney or accountant to determine the best arrangement for your business.

  7. Establish an online presence. Most businesses need an online presence in order to reach customers and remain competitive. Establish a social media presence, website, and email account and begin communicating your brand message.

  8. Hire employees. Hiring employees is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your business. Identify the skills and experience you need, and consider using outside recruiting agencies to find the right fit for your company.

  9. Market and sell. Take your sales and marketing message to the public. Develop an advertising plan, including online and traditional marketing, and implement it. Determine the best ways to reach customers in your target market and get your message out.

  10. Monitor progress. Once your business is up and running, you need to continuously measure your progress and make adjustments as necessary. Evaluate your performance regularly and keep track of your financials.
