GM Jonathan Speelman is a legendary British chess grandmaster who achieved the highest chess title of Grandmaster (GM) in 1986. He is also the author of several esteemed chess books.
Throughout his career, GM Speelman had many notable achievements, including achieving a peak FIDE rating of 2651 and becoming the under-18 World Chess Champion in 1977, the British Chess Champion four times, and reaching the Candidate’s stage of the World Chess Championship cycle three times. He was also most famous for defeating World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov in the match-up of their two careers in Linares, Spain in 1988.
When asked about other chess greats, GM Speelman had particularly high praise for Ukrainian Grandmaster Vassily Ivanchuk, one of the leading world grandmasters in chess of the modern era.
