In this clip, Tim Dodd, also known as “The Everyday Astronaut”, recalls almost dying while wearing a Russian space suit. He was at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, the launch location for many of the Soviet Union’s manned space launches. He was invited to suit up in the Sokol space suit (known as the “Gagarin suit”), have a few photos taken, and then exit the suit. Unfortunately, the suit’s cockpit had filled with nitrogen during the brief exposure, and when Dodd opened his egress hatch, he immediately blacked out. Luckily, a medic nearby was able to revive him with a shot of epinephrine and he only suffered minor damage to his eyes and a few cuts from his nails digging into his wrists. To date, it is still unclear how the nitrogen ended up in the suit, but Dodd believes that the seals were the cause of the inflate.
